Sonja, also known as Sofie Mikhaylova, is a DJ, experimental synth artist, music writer and editor, workshop organizer and facilitator, and creator of independent record label Biblioteka Records. As a DJ, she enjoys playing with genres touching leftfield techno and deep house, and has a monthly residency on Miami-based station Empty Plate Radio. She also curates DJ mix series Sonja and Friends. As a musician, she relies on analogue hardware for improvised, alien, and fleeting modular synthesizer sets that play with, at different times, deconstructed drone, ambient, club, and noise music. In October 2020, she released her first experimental modular/found sounds EP, “Grounding.” In addition to making music, she also curates and teaches workshops on topics ranging from beginner guides to modular synthesis and music production to starting one’s own record label. The coming 60 minutes you will be offered an experimental techno mix featuring some recent additions to Sonja's collection and some of her longtime favourites. Some words by Sonja: "I had wanted to do just a pure hard techno mix, but, since a lot of these songs wouldn’t really make a ton of sense in the club, and we don’t know when we’ll ever be back in there, I wanted to take this opportunity to mix some of my more unusual techno selections together. This mix is an ode to the most underground of underground parties, of fluctuating songs, to disco lovers, to colourful, dressed up techno fans, to dancers beyond the all black. It’s an ode to dancing in general, moving the body freely, connecting with the music. It’s a combination of darker sounds with elements of joyful freedom. As a DJ, I’ve always felt my role was to move and surprise. The Britney Spears remix at the end of this mix is an air kiss blown to the shameless pop music lovers who are always ready to have fun on the dancefloor, to be non judgemental. The techno scene can be so painfully purist sometimes. It doesn’t have to be so serious. Music can be fun. Let the rhythm show you how to explore and experiment."

I've always wanted to do a series focused on music for working. I work on my computer a lot, and I know certain songs help propel me further into the focused zone. I don't really like to work in silence; some type of playlist is always essential. Study Sessions is an after school mix series, a late night cram sesh soundtrack, songs selected especially for getting it done. I've always leaned towards something with rhythm to work to, something to keep the energy up and groove to.
